[Lookbook] Avocado Milk Shake (Beaches are Hotter in Boracay)

They say you haven’t been to Boracay without trying Jonah’s Fruitshakes. It’s a fruitshake pub along Station 1 with a strategic beachfront location; which also has branches along the main road, by the way. My personal favorite is their Banana Choco Peanut shake which has always been a Boracay staple for me. But during my Boracay 2013 trip, I tried another bestseller – Avocado Milk shake.

What I’m wearing: ombre T-shirt (Island Souvenirs), board shorts (Mossimo), white-framed sunglasses (SM Accessories), fedora hat (SM Accessories). Hype this look on Lookbook here.

I super like this ombre T-shirt from Island Souvenirs – very summer looking and perfectly matching my avocado shake peg hehe; my friends like it too :). For the board shorts, I got it from Mossimo a few years back. Sunglasses and fedora hat are from SM Accessories where you can buy affordable fashion items for both men and women ;).

Jonah’s Avocado milkshake tastes rich and full although it’s a little too sweet for my taste bud (nagdi-diet kasi). Nevertheless, the thick taste of avocado and milk were delivered; I would love to try this again on my next trip to Boracay.

Jonah’s Avocado Milkshake

But I guess Jonah’s Banana Choco Peanut milkshake is still my bet FTW (the first two from the left)! Mango-based shakes are also one of their best sellers especially to foreign tourists. As for the watermelon shake, I was able to zip a little and I would say it tastes refreshing!

Definitely, Jonah’s Fruitshakes is another reason why…

[Lookbook] Waiting for Sunset

Label(s): , , , , ; Posted By Ry

Sunset in Boracay is probably one of the best sunset sceneries in the world. Most describe it as breathtaking, dramatic and for the couples – romantic. It should definitely be part of anyone’s itinerary when having a vacation in the island; truly a must-see.

What I’m wearing: tank top (Forever 21), board shorts (Folded and Hung), shades (SM Accessories). Hype this look on Lookbook here.

I like how the dark blue-maroon blocks/lines contrasted against the off-white base of the tank top which I got from Forever 21. For the board shorts, this is currently my favorite. It’s simple with just a solid light blue color with straight zipper pockets at each side – again, Folded and Hung did it again in the function and style departments. The shades, on the other hand, is from SM Accessories where I usually get stylish yet affordable accessories.

Btw, one way of appreciating Boracay sunset is by hiring a paraw, an outrigger sail boat, just before sunset. Many locals offer it ranging from 700-1,500 pesos depending on the boat’s size.

Or you can also simply just watch it from the shore and maybe have a silhouette photo that you can upload in Facebook and probably make it as a good cover photo.

[Lookbook] Encanto in Boracay

Label(s): , , , , ; Posted By Ry

On my last entry, I featured Sofite'l’s Spiral Buffet where we celebrated my friend’s 26th birthday. And speaking of birthday, I can’t help but reminisce how I celebrated mine last April. It was my first out of town birthday – it was in Boracay!

What I’m wearing: tank top (Cotton On), board shorts (Folded and Hung), shades (SM Accessories). Hype this look on Lookbook here.

It was my first time to buy at Cotton On. In fairness I was surprised, I didn’t expect that Cotton On has such an interesting collection. The one that I got is currently my favorite tank top as I find the Encanto design sophisticated. Of course, don’t forget to bring your shades. You can find affordable yet stylish shades at SM Accessories.

E N C A N T O

Folded and Hung never fails to deliver functional and stylish board shorts.

When we had dinner at Astoria Boracay, I changed my shades to this clear black-framed eyeglasses from Forever 21 since there was no more need to cover against the sun. And again, I want to reemphasize how I love the Encanto tank top that I got from Cotton On – at certain angles, it gave me a more muscular look than actual, agree (hehe)?

Thanks Kuya Gino, Francis, Oliver and Bert for the surprise cute little cake

I really appreciate it :). My 28th was a blast!

[Lookbook] Boracay Blues

Label(s): , , , , ; Posted By Ry

On my second to the last blog entry, I posted my look while I was on my way to Boracay last Summer 2013. Take note: summer in Manila is March to May. But it’s just midway summer for the northern hemisphere of the world; so for this entry, I’m sharing this beach look that I’ve got last summer.

What I’m wearing: tank top (Folded and Hung), board shorts (Mossimo), flip-flops (Havaianas), white-framed shades (SM Accessories). Hype this on Lookbook here.

by now, you know what my favorite color is :D

This tank top from Folded and Hung makes my shoulders look broader hehe.

This is one of my favorite board shorts. It’s only above knee level so it gives this illusion that I have longer legs; and thus, makes me look taller. It has three bright curved linings on the pocket area which break the monotony of its solid dark blue shade.

And don’t forget to bring your shades! I can barely open my eyes without them; got mine from SM Accessories.

[Lookbook] Off to Boracay 2013

Label(s): , , , , ; Posted By Ry

It’s rainy season already here in Manila but summer has just started for most parts of the world. Besides, it’s practically hot all year round here :p. Probably my must go to destination during summer is one of the best islands in the world – Boracay!

What I’m wearing: tank top (Folded and Hung), chambray shirt (Giordano), walk shorts (Penshoppe), black-framed glasses (Forever 21), fedora hat (SM Accessories). Hype this on Lookbook here.

checking in at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3

I got this tank top from Folded and Hung about two summers ago. I just love its feather design which gives this casual tank a sophisticated touch. I also covered myself with a  lightweight chambray shirt from Giordano to keep me a little warm while inside the airport and the plane. I already wore my walk shorts from Penshoppe on the airport; it’s not an eye candy to wear jeans while strolling along white beach in Boracay.

one-hour travel from Manila to Kalibo Airport via plane

It’s the time of the year to wear that fedora hat; got mine from SM Accessories. I reserved my sunglasses on the beach; for now (while indoors), it would be my clear black-framed glasses from Forever 21 which gives me a nice guy look hehe.

it was my birthday celebration at Boracay, yay!

[Lookbook] Lahar Trekking

Label(s): , , , ; Posted By Ry

One of my vacations last summer is in Mt. Pinatubo. Yes, on top of it – the crater itself. This is Tictang Gang’s (my high school friends) summer getaway for this year. The view is really amazing and a lot of foreign tourists cannot help but be wowed. I kept wondering how its calmness once disturbed thousands of lives.

What I’m wearing: v-neck shirt (Penshoppe), jacket (Adidas Originals), board shorts (Folded and Hung). Hype this on Lookbook here.

on the way to the crater – lahar everywhere

Trekking up the crater is a tiring and sweaty activity so I just wore a simple v-neck shirt from Penshoppe; I had an orange one since it was summer and also to break the blue color monotony.

I like this royal blue shorts from Folded and Hung, it has two side pockets big enough for my personal stuffs. I also needed to bring my Adidas Originals jacket as the wind blows really cold at the top – love how the three blue stripes strikingly complement the dark blue base.

SM North EDSA’s Great Northern Sale July 2012

Label(s): , , ; Posted By Ry

Attention shopaholics! SM North EDSA in Quezon City will again hold a Great Northern Sale on July 13-15, 2012 (Friday to Sunday). And it’s not an ordinary mall or stall sale as the Great Northern Sale offers deals from ALL brands, stores and dining places. The tagline is actually “Major Discounts EVERYWHERE You Look” of up to 70% off on selected items.

I’m not really a shopaholic but I think I need to buy some clothes that I can wear at the office and when I’m hanging out with friends. My personal favorite is Forever 21 where I plan to buy a polo and that stylish cardigan that I saw the other day :).

You know the drill… save the date(s) and see you there ;).

My Sexy Revolution Starts Now

Label(s): ; Posted By Ry

Blame it to the genes! Having an endomorph type of body (slow metabolism), myself, I know how it’s frustrating to be prone to fat build up while your genetically gifted friend eats bigger portions yet maintains his/her shape. I can relate…

I have ever been conscious on how I look. What’s harder is that getting in shape for a guy is not all about losing weight but also involves having muscular physique to get that extra pogi points ;). I started going to the gym for the hope of a sexy body. The point that my first Boracay during summer 2010 was approaching got me even more motivated yet pressured. But I was clueless. And here’s the pathetic result:

from 160+lbs down to 130+lbs… yes, I lost weight but it’s NOT sexy!

left pic: skinny body with bulgy tummy and big thighs; right pic: hindi humihinga para maitago ang taba

Here’s what happened: as I lifted weights to get those big arms, I starved. All that I believed is that I should not eat as long as I can so I won’t get fat. However, I realized that our body is actually intelligent enough that, when in starvation, it slows down the metabolism to save energy and attempts to store fat for energy reserves (since the body is already in panic mode). Ang ending, naging SKINNY FAT ako. And as you can see, losing weight alone is not sexy for a guy… we are looking for muscles!

For summer 2011, it was another push-yourself-to-the-limit workout. Since I became so skinny and underweight, the next step was to gain some pounds back. Besides, anorexic is NOT sexy especially for guys. And this time, I didn’t starve. I tried to eat healthy but I didn’t count calories or at least cared much on the portion sizes of what I eat. What I just knew then is that I should not starve. I also did just the same routine in lifting weights when I’m working out. So for my Boracay 2011:

nag-improve naman kahit papaano ‘di ba? (say yes please)… but then again, still NOT sexy

I was able to increase my weight from 130+ to around 140+lbs. Yes, I improved; but I must admit that it’s not enough. In fact, my ribs were still visible and my tummy remained circular at the side/oblique area. I had to put my arms on my waist to hide my flabs on my photos.

I was still a little skinny but the fats on my oblique area remained

not proportional, stubborn flabs!

As early as September 2011, my friends and I booked for our Summer 2012 Boracay trip. Hindi naman kami masyadong excited no! And this means pressure na naman sa workouts at diet. So I researched hard on workout plans that suit my goals and the food that I should be eating. I told myself that this time I want to make it right, I want results… significant results.

To make sure that I’m doing my workout right, I got a personal trainer in the gym to guide me on different workout techniques and keep me motivated. I learned that it’s not all about lifting weights; there should be variations on the workout routine to avoid your body on adapting and getting “immune”.

motivation: rarampa pa ako sa Boracay :))

seriously, you really need motivation to get you started

I was advised to stick to one goal at a time to maximize the results. So in my case, my goal is to pack on muscle mass – the “bulking” phase. And to build muscles, I should eat MORE THAN ENOUGH because our body won’t provide fuel for muscle growth if it doesn’t have excess energy to spare. In particular, I started eating high protein foods from meat sources and lessen my carbs. I now also count my calorie intake per day religiously (hassle pero kailangan e). I take around 18-20 calories per pound of body weight. So when I was 140+lbs, I took 2,500-2800 calories distributed in 6-7 smaller meals, instead of 3 heavy meals, per day to boost metabolism.

I replaced white rice with old fashioned oatmeal. I also take other fiber rich food, low fat milk for added protein, and peanut butter. Yes, the latter maybe high in fats but they’re mostly the healthy type. Peanut butter can actually work wonders for you when taken in moderation as it slows down the digestion of food and keeps you feeling full and, thus, prevents you from overeating.

junk food no more!

Protein is crucial for muscle growth so I also take in protein supplements to help me achieve my required daily protein needs which I set to a minimum of 1.2grams per pound of body weight per day. So when I was 140+lbs, I took at least 168g of protein distributed across 6-7 meals a day.

my protein supplements (kariran na eto!)

I actually monitored my progress through an electronic device in the gym that measures body composition. And here are the results for the segmental lean analysis which shows the estimated LEAN (non-fat) mass in my body:

muscles at last… hay salamat naman :D

I was able to pump some muscles into my body and is currently at 150+lbs. It has just been a few months so don’t expect a bikini body :)). But at least, I can now see relatively satisfactory results compare to my previous workout and diet routines. So here’s my Boracay 2012 shot:

skinny no more!

Now here’s the drawback: since I have to eat more than what is enough to build muscles, tendency of gaining fat along the way is also present especially in the cases of endomorphs like me (genes! genes! genes!). Yes, my camera was able to hide my bulgy tummy on the picture above – tamang anggulo, ilaw at non-breathing lang yan hihi. The muscles that I packed also helped compensate the fats that I gained in terms of overall appearance. But the body composition analyzer doesn’t lie. And here’s my before and after segmental FAT analysis :(…

unfortunately, my already “Over” fat rating went even higher (although this is already expected for someone in the muscle bulking phase)

I’m still on the muscle bulking phase and I have to accept the fats that come along the way. And when I have finally packed enough, my goal will shift from “bulking” to “cutting” where I will eventually start to lose weight to the right level. It will be very difficult as I want to do it in a gradual manner to make sure that I’ll be burning the fats, not the muscles.

Hay… why is the first place to gain fat, the last place to lose fat? First In, Last Out - and it is just unfair. Gladly, I recently found out that there are now technological interventions available that can help people like me to melt those fats away more quickly than regular diet alone. Lipo Cavitation is a procedure that breaks down the fat cells on stubborn areas such as the abdomen and thighs and one more great thing about it is that it’s NON-INVASIVE. Body sculpting and toning are now also available for a lean and toned body. The trusted Belo Medical Group actually now has dedicated clinics for such services – the Sexy Solutions by Belo.

and there’s an ongoing promo for May 2012!

Sexy Solutions also has fitness and nutrition consultants to correct any wrong routine that we may have been doing so as not to waste our efforts. Besides, all the hard work at the gym are trash without proper diet; and I learned my lessons the hard way. One more thing: we don’t need to be hungry to get sexy! In fact, it may even be the reciprocal.

I still have a long way to get a sexy and muscular physique. But non-invasive fat melting procedures, such as those by Sexy Solutions, can help me achieve my goals sooner than expected. Who says I need to wait for next summer to get that beach body? Kaya humanda ka na Boracay for Summer 2013! :D

Forever 21 SM North EDSA The Block Now Open!

Label(s): , , ; Posted By Ry

Since I have blogged that Forever 21 is opening soon at SM North EDSA, it has been consistently on the most read posts of this blog. It has been three months since then…

Last night, I dropped by the second floor atrium area of SM North EDSA The Block before going to the gym; and here’s what I saw:

finally…

Yes shopaholics, Forever 21 is now open at SM North EDSA The Block! Since it was not yet for public consumption that night, I just took some photos from the outside.

eto ang literal na window shopping :))

For the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) fans out there (myself not included), I’m sure you will recognize Forever 21’s endrosers.

ex-PBB housemates Carlo Romer and Wendy Tabusalla

It’s good that people from the North don’t have to go all the way to SM Makati or SM Megamall anymore to buy clothes from Forever 21 with the opening of this new branch in SM North EDSA The Block. And I’m pretty sure many of you are just so excited to raid it ;). Makadaan nga mamaya at nang makapag-(window)shopping :)).

EDIT [as of 04/20/2012]: Forever 21 SM North EDSA The Block is NOW OPEN!

So I have a lot of girlfriends (friend na girls) who are talking about Forever 21 when it comes to clothing. When I went to Forever 21 SM Makati, I realized they have a men’s line too and I must admit their collection is really fashionable. Currently, it’s either you go to their SM Makati or Megamall branch (also a Cebu branch).

Attention people from the north! Look who’s (what’s) coming nearby…

(the future) Forever 21 SM North EDSA The Block

Our Home store will move to the Interior Zone of SM North EDSA. And yes, Forever 21 will be coming to the North soon and I just can’t wait to shop (akala mo maraming pera e no)!

Flawless Nga Ba?

Label(s): ; Posted By Ry

[UPDATE as of April 2012]: Flawless has probably taken some actions on this as I am now receiving promo notifications within the promo period.

Because of my very oily and haggard skin, I try to grab promos on Power Peel, Diamond Peel and other facial services from supposed-to-be reputable facial salons. So when I received a promo e-mail from Flawless, I was so excited to read through the details and the services included.
just right for my upcoming summer escapade ;))

Arggh, the bad thing is that it's only valid for four days from March 17-20, 2011 only.

But wait, it's not yet the catch. Here's what really pissed me off:

Dear Flawless,
I'm already disappointed by some of your staff who seem to be in a hurry when giving me a power peel. They do it 10mins instead of the standard 15-20mins - it's like 50% off the service! Now, you are very proud to let me know of your promo three days after it ended. Sana man lang sinabi nyo kahit nung last day.

Flawless nga ba...?

Quick Fix for Oily Face... Hopefully

Label(s): ; Posted By Ry

Disclaimer: This is NOT a paid advertisement/post. I bought the product myself to see if it really works.

I always have an oily face since my puberty days. I have tried sorts of oil control facial washes, toners, mattifying creams and films. Most of them helped in delaying like an hour for the sebum to overflow but still not good enough to not let me bother anymore in the succeeding hours. In fact, I have days where I need to apply toner every three hours just to wipe the oil out of my greasy face.

Recently, I've heard yet another product that, again, gives oil-trapping promises among others. What's interesting though is that it's currently gaining positive reviews on the net. Maybe one of the most rave is from the Sole Sisters. Upon reading it, I really feel enthusiastic to try it as the it really sounds promising - it's the Summer Teen BB Cream.
photo from the official website - http://www.summerbb.com.sg/

BB cream is the generic name, Summer BB is the brand and Summer Teen BB is for oily skin.
BB stands for : blemish Balm, started off as a soothing treatment balm dermatologists use on patients who underwent laser treatment. It helps to shield, protect and regenerate delicate skin. Soon enough, Korea actress and star started using this cream and sparked off a craze for this “miracle cream” in Korea due to its effective and excellent results.

In the Philippines, the official distributor is Magic Potions. So I ordered online hoping to be photogenic on my upcoming summer escapade. The e-mail confirmation took a few hours to arrive since they consolidate the orders manually. I also got a text with the package tracking number which I can check online in LBC. I got the item the next business day.
priced at 950 + 100 shipping cost + 44.14 online payment charge (I used my credit card)

What's inside?
Summer Teen BB, some brochures and a freebie item which is the Sheep Placenta Collagen Hydrating Facial Mask (whew!)

Summer Teen BB looks small on the web but it's actually bigger than I thought.
Summer Teen BB is a fresh lightweight, water-resistant and sebum control Blemish Balm that corrects skin tone and protects against sun damage. It contains natural Embilica Extract that gives an intensive whitening effect and natural matte finish. The product is water-resistant (silicone-based).

I'm optimistic about this particular brand of BB since it's, according to ads, formulated for tropical countries like the Philippines. It's also gaining popularity in Singapore where fake products and claims, generally speaking, are No-No's. Promises also include a no-makeup-look so this is also recommended for vain men like me :). By the way, this is made in Korea.

I am yet to try it and I'll post the result of my findings in the following weeks or months to come.
